"Unequal Health"-research report by the BME VCS Regional Panel

Submitted by editor on Tue, 16/09/2008 - 4:24pm.

The BME VCS Regional Panel has carried out research into health inequalities for BME populations. The study raises issues around the equality of access to NHS services and it points to the failure of some systems and processes which unwittingly disadvantage black and minority ethnic communities.

This research offers many collaborative opportunities to fill the gaps and pioneer good practice for the future sustainability of the National Health in the region and nationally.

Two thirds of newspaper stories say British Muslims are 'a threat' or 'problem'

Submitted by editor on Fri, 12/09/2008 - 2:20pm.

A new report has found that, since 2000, two thirds of newspaper articles about Muslims in Britain portray British Muslims as either 'a threat' or 'problem' and increasingly utilise negative and stereotypical imagery.
The forty-page report, entitled Images of Islam in the UK, set out to analyse a representative sample of newspaper articles in British tabloids and broadsheets between 2000 and 2008. In particular the authors, the Cardiff School of Journalism, Media and Cultural Studies, sought to engage with the 'routine, everyday coverage of British Muslims' over and above the coverage which occurred around key events, such as 11 September 2001 attacks and 7 July 2005 London bombings.

Evaluation of the National Programme for Third Sector Commissioning:Consultation with BME Third Sector Organisations

Submitted by editor on Thu, 11/09/2008 - 3:11pm.

The IDeA has commissioned this research into the BME TSOs’ current experiences of commissioning and whether any additional barriers or difficulties exist around their involvement in commissioning. The report should not be used to generalise across all BME TSOs; rather, it gives a sense of the kinds of additional difficulties BME TSOs face, and perceive to be facing, in becoming more involved in commissioning. This report therefore stands alongside the full report, which is available on the IDeA Knowledge website.

The report can be accessed at www.idea.gov.uk/idk/aio/8458905
